This moving checklist can help you plan an organized relocation of your family and home.

Do Not Ship These Items - Do you know what you can not ship in a moving truck or you-pack container? Check out this list of no ship items before you start packing here.

8 Weeks Before Moving

[ ] Research moving companies – look for positive reviews and ask family and friends for referrals

[ ] Budget for moving expenses

[ ] Create a "move file" or binder to keep track of quotes, receipts and other move-related information

[ ] Research your new community

[ ] Sort and purge home - Go through every room and box items into keep, sell, donate or discard

7 Weeks Before Moving

[ ] Collect estimates from moving companies

[ ] Plan a garage sale

[ ] Use items that can’t be moved like frozen foods, bleach, aerosols and other no ship items. See more items here on No Ship List 

[ ] Order moving supplies – boxes and other supplies such as tape, bubble wrap and permanent markers. You may want to order special containers such as dish barrels or wardrobe boxes

6 Weeks Before Moving

[ ] How will you move valuables or difficult to replace items? (certified mail, carry them with you)

[ ] Compile or organize medical, dental, prescription and shot records

[ ] Ask for doctor referrals in your new city

[ ] Arrange to have school records transferred for all children

[ ] Arrange to have veterinarian records transferred for all pets or ask for copies and add to your moving file

[ ] Gather copies of legal and financial records

[ ] Call insurance agent for changes to home & auto policies

[ ] Transfer or cancel memberships to health clubs or other organizations, groups or clubs

5 Weeks Before Moving

[ ] Begin packing infrequently used items – note items of special value that may require additional insurance from your moving company. Declare in writing any items valued over $100 per pound, such as a computer

[ ] Clearly label each box with contents and room – pack and label “essentials” on boxes of items that you will need right away or a large X on all sides.

[ ] Separate valuables – pack items such as jewelry and important files to a safe box that will be personally transported to your new home. Add the mover’s estimate in the box; you’ll need it for moving day

[ ] Choose mover and confirm arrangements – get written confirmation of moving date, costs and other details

[ ] File change of address with postal service or do it online at It is smart to have a trusted neighbor check for mail after your move and check in with them at 2 weeks and 4 weeks after the move.

4 Weeks Before Moving

[ ] Notify utility services at both locations – electric, gas, water, telephone, cell phone, cable/internet, sewer, trash collection

[ ] Notify professional services of your move – account, attorney, financial planner, health insurance provider, insurance agent, schools, and brokerage firms

[ ] Notify bank, credit union, finance companies, employer’s human resources department, magazine/newspapers, credit card companies, auto finance companies, exterminator, health clubs, home care service providers, lawn, exterminator, snow removal etc., laundry service, magazines, monthly memberships, book or wine of the month, Netflix, newsletters, newspapers, pharmacy, store/ gas charge accounts,

[ ] Make travel arrangements for pets

[ ] Notify Landlord if you are moving from a rental and find out when you can have your security deposit returned.

3 Weeks Before Moving

[ ] Plan how to transport plants or give away – plants cannot be moved in a trailer or you-pack container

[ ] Dispose of flammables, corrosives and poisons. Read Do Not Ship List for a list of these items

[ ] Service Automobile

2 Weeks Before Moving

[ ] Notify government offices of your move - City/County tax Assessor, state vehicle registration, social security administration, state/federal Tax Bureau (IRS), Veterans Administration

[ ] Confirm travel arrangements for family and pets

[ ] Confirm parking for your moving trailer or moving container and Obtain permits if needed

[ ] Plan meals for last week to use up food

[ ] Assemble a folder of important info about your house for the next home owner

[ ] Arrange to be off from work on moving day to supervise the move

[ ] Clean out safe-deposit box and add to safe box

[ ] Reconfirm moving arrangements with moving company

One Week Before Moving

[ ] Refill all prescriptions you will need for the next few weeks

[ ] Pack suitcases a few days before your moving date with enough closes to wear for a few days.

[ ] Notify family and friends of your new address and phone

[ ] Pack safe box

[ ] Drain gas and oil from lawn equipment, gas grills, heaters, etc.

[ ] Measure furniture and doorways to determine if larger pieces will fit through the door


A Few Days Before Moving

[ ] Empty and defrost refrigerator at least 24 hours before the move

[ ] Double check the details – review moving plans, reconfirm moving company’s arrival time and other specifics and have exact written directions to your new home for staff including your contact information and cell phone number

[ ] Plan for Payment – get a money order, cashier’s check or cash for payment and tip. (10 to 15 percent of the total fee is a good tip)

[ ] Print two copies of your bill of lading to keep in your move file

[ ] Drain water hoses and waterbeds


Moving Day Checklist

[ ] Verify USDOT number painted on side matches number on estimate. Scams are not unheard-of.

[ ] Take inventory – before movers leave, sign the bill of lading/inventory list and keep a copy in your safe box

[ ] Personally supervised hired labor and be familiar with movers packing and loading tips

[ ] Place carpet, floor and door frame protectors throughout your home

[ ] Load goods in pre-designated order, saving “last Load” items for the rear of your shipment

[ ] Check every room, closet to make sure nothing is left behind before the movers leave

[ ] Call local service center to have loaded moving trailer or you-pack container pick up

[ ] Leave a note with your new address so future residents can forward stray mail
